Jose Fernandez is the Marlins star phenom pitcher from Cuba. At just 21 years old, Fernandez is 9-5 for a team that is 48-75. He leads the team with a 2.41 earned run average and 157 strikeouts. He hasn’t allowed a home run since July 23rd and he hasn’t lost a game since July 7th in St. Louis.
Fernandez has dominated this month. He started the month against Cleveland on August 2nd and threw eight scoreless innings while striking out a career high 14 batters in a 10-0 win. He had an average start at Pittsburgh on the 8th allowing two runs in five innings. Then on the 13th at Kansas City, Fernandez went seven innings allowing only three hits and no runs. On the 19th he faced Yasiel Puig and the Dodgers. Puig went 0-3 against Fernandez in a 6-2 Marlins win. After the game Fernandez said, “It’s not a big deal, It’s one game. I don’t think at all that I’m better than him. His talent is no doubt.”
Fernandez is a favorite to win Rookie of the Year and should be a star for many years.
