Cristiano Ronaldo is the 2013 Ballon d’Or winner. After spending the last four years in the audience watching Lionel Messi make history, the Portuguese forward has finally dethroned the Argentine forward for the title of best player in the world. The Real Madrid superstar enjoyed an incredible 2013 year. He found the back of the net 66 times in 56 appearances for club and country.
The competition was stiff this year for the award. Franck Ribery (UEFA’s player of the year), made his claim for the award with his leading assist numbers and his club Bayern Munich dominating Europe by winning five trophies. Lionel Messi’s club Barcelona won the Spanish league title ousting Real Madrid and his 42 goals in 2013 made him a finalist. But that was not enough to ruin Ronaldo’s night. An emotional Ronaldo accepted the award as if he finally felt his hard work was appreciated.
Now with 2014 starting, look for other top players to compete for the award. Lionel Messi will for sure look to take his title back. Keep an eye out for Luis Suarez as he is in fine form and aiming for his first Ballon d’Or. Franck Ribery will be looking to make the Ballon d’Or ceremony an annual destination for himself as well.
The other winners in the ceremony:
FIFA Puskas Award (Best goal of the year): Zlatan Ibrahimović (Sweden)
Women’s world player of the year: Nadine Angerer (Germany)
Coach of the Year Award: Jupp Heynckes (Bayern Munich)
Coach of the Year Award: Silvia Neid (Woman’s German national team)
