The Beast of the Week: Tom Brady & David Ortiz

It’s amazing when a city comes together immediately after a major tragedy. It’s even better when two of the biggest sports names in the city both have incredible big game plays at the end. How can you not admire Boston?

First at Gillette Stadium the Patriots come from behind and beat the Saints. All game the Saints were aiming for the Patriots’ heads. Patriots’ wide receiver Kenbrell Thompkins was one of the victims when Malcolm Jenkins of the Saints did a helmet to helmet hit on him. And then Jenkins argued the penalty. He looked stupid arguing when they showed the replay. Thompkins got his revenge later by catching a game winning touchdown with five seconds left. Tom Brady had just over a minute and led them down the field for that winning drive. It was a great win for the Patriots. The Saints sure showed why there was bountygate. The NFL should do another investigation. They also knocked out Danny Amendola with a concussion, among other things. Those hits will take their toll on those Patriot players, but that made the win sweeter.

After the Boston Marathon bombings, Red Sox slugger David Ortiz went on the field and spoke to Fenway Park after they just honored the police officers that had gone on the field. He thanked them and the mayor, and then he said, “This is our fucking city,” when he said that the crowd went crazy. As he was walking off the field, police officers were shaking his hand. There will probably never be a more perfect time to say a bad word. Ortiz was the perfect person to say it.

After the Patriot game, the Red Sox played Game 2 of the ALCS against the Detroit Tigers. Down 5-1 in the 8th inning, David Ortiz came up with the bases loaded and hit a grand slam to tie it up. The crowd went crazy, the Red Sox players too. They came out of the dugout to congratulate him and give him a hug. You just don’t normally see that passion in baseball. The Red Sox ended up winning, but that grand slam was huge.

Tom Brady has won three Super Bowls with the Patriots. David Ortiz has won two World Series with the Red Sox. For them both to have incredible plays in the same day and in huge games is incredible. Between the touchdown and the home run, I have never seen better fan excitement in my life.

All those reasons are why Brady and Ortiz are these weeks Beasts of the Week.
